MOGIMOUSSE Skincare

GiselaAlvarezThey say that true beauty comes from within. Gisela Alvarez, owner of the new vegan skincare line, MOGIMOUSSE, knows all too well that letting go of the past in order to embrace a brighter future is what helps to keep a woman’s glow alive.

Never would she have dreamed of becoming a successful female entrepreneur after leaving home at only sixteen years of age. Without parents, mentors or relatives, the determined (May 1st born) Taurus traveled from country to country as a true gypsy having lived in Paris, The Netherlands, Germany and England, just to name a few.

Gisela“I faced all kinds of adversities when I was a teen,” says Gisela. “So I understand why it’s so important for young girls dealing with abandonment issues to have good role models, even if it means that they’re watching them on TV or reading about them in books if they’re not within the home.”

Gisela knows that the launch of her new skincare line MOGIMOUSSE is more than just a product; it’s a lifestyle. Formed underneath her parent company Brooklyn Funk Factory Gisela aims to educate consumers about the brilliance of being eco-friendly, health conscious, and animal cruelty free.

However, the journey to success was not paved with gold. Moving to New York City with a mere fifty dollars in her pocket over fifteen years ago was a bold and courageous move, but one that was necessary for the beginning of a new life.

In the midst of juggling three jobs, she was eventually invited to bartend at some of the most popular nights clubs in Manhattan. The excitement of the nightlife scene brought friends, romance, and new opportunities for a fresh start.

As the years went on, Gisela got back on her feet as a  woman who made peace with her past. Then… as destiny would have it, true beauty called.

mogimousse_sheabutterIt’s no secret that women have to maintain their outer appearance to look presentable on job interviews, to look attractive on dates, and to express their personality through fashion. Nevertheless, Gisela had extra dry/dehydrated skin from all the different environments that she’d been exposed to, not to mention the stress that she’d been under years ago. Hence, it had become time for her to revitalize her natural beauty and pamper herself. After all, she deserved it!

Vegan Drink – Flaco Coquito

Flaco_CoquitoIf all it takes is one person to make a difference, then imagine what a family can do? Cynthia Sepulveda Caballero, a mother of three, has paved the way for her daughters to inherit greatness as they work closely together, moving and shaking within the Entertainment industry as brand ambassadors of Cynthia’s product “Flaco Coquito – The Skinny Coquito”.

Have you ever noticed the genius marketing skills behind Pepsi commercials as they’d hire only the biggest celebrities such as Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Shakira and Britney Spears just to name a few? Well, in that same concept, Cynthia Sepulveda Caballero, has been making a huge impact in the indie art scene as today’s go-to drink by connecting with several artists! The difference? Is that while Coquito is an alcoholic coconut flavored drink popular within the Caribbean, most of mainstream America is still unfamiliar with it. You see, drinking Coquito is a huge tradition amongst Latino communities, especially around Christmas when relatives show up at your doorstop with a bottle to share. However, the cool thing about Flaco Coquito – The Skinny Coquito, is that it’s the first of its kind to be offered with vegan, organic and low fat options for the purpose of maintaining ones health.

“Flaco Coquito is all about change and innovation,” says Caballero. “We are trendsetting, and we place a high value on maintaining a healthy lifestyle which is why my daughter, Elena Rosa, is the perfect face to represent this company because she’s very conscious of the way she eats and how she lives.”

Elena_Rosa&Natalia

Cynthia'sMOMSpeaking of change, while Caballero was pushing Flaco Coquito within the indie art scene, she formed a bond with gypsy soul singer, Edwin Vazquez, whom she worked closely with for a few years. Within that period, Edwin gave her daughter, Elena, vocal lessons while Cynthia managed and booked some of his performances. However, as life would have it, the inevitable occurred when it became time for Cynthia to lay her mother to rest after she passed away just this year.

“Losing a parent is horrible,” says Caballero. “Because it’s still fresh, it still feels unreal to me. There’s times that I wanna call her and then I forget that she’s not here anymore. But then I remember how she wouldn’t want me to wallow. She’d want me to press on. She’d want me to be happy.”

“The Hair Klinik” Founder Mevelin Camacho

“What you put inside of your body shows”, says Mevelin Camacho (Founder of The Hair Klinik).  “Your pores are absorbing all of the chemicals which changes your aura and energy field. This is why my products are completely organic.”

Organic-Shea-Butter-Renewal-Mask-350x526Without an excessive amount of ingredients, her line mainly uses cinnamon, honey and coconut oil (and more) that offers hydration, shine, and hair growth. Speaking for myself, I was pleasantly surprised after using the Organic Shea Butter Renewal Mask: For Extreme Hair Repair because it softened the dryness in my hair. I’m one of those “I can’t live without my hot iron to smooth out the frizzes”, but as we all know, hot irons cause some of the most damage to the hair. Someone even joked about me having to shave my head bald so I can begin again by growing out my natural hair… well… to be honest… It was my little sister who said to, because she had no fear in shaming me in that annoying yet lovingly sisterly way. But thank god for this mask because it’s truly a miracle in a jar!

Maya Goddess Juices

10470809_406982646117549_6590479447245819964_n Beauty comes from within. No wonder why “juice expert” Maya Chambers, who is a wellness coach, visionary and founder of Maya Goddess, exudes so much beauty. When we met for the first time in the West Village at Think Coffee, I knew right away who was responsible for creating Maya Goddess. Tall & sleek with a short ‘do, strong eyes with an inviting smile, a bold color red on her lips that just so happened to match the same hue on her nails, vibrant skin; beauty emanated from her. I introduced myself with confidence knowing that this was in fact Maya.

While we were on line choosing our style of hydration, (she chose cold and refreshing water, I chose a hot herbal tea,) Maya quickly apologized for pushing back the meeting time so that she could deliver a juice to one of her clients. Of course it did not cause a problem with me, I was super impressed. Like, hello she hand delivers… couldn’t wait to hear more.

Maya Goddess Juices

After finding a nice semi-quiet spot (it took a minute, we are in NYC after all) we sat, sipped and chatted for what seemed like minutes but were more like hours. This is when I discovered that her outer beauty was a reflection of her inner beauty.

Intrigued in how Maya Goddess came about we took it back, way back. Maya is a lovely blend of Latina roots. The women before her came from the islands of Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Spain and Turks & Caicos, a Goddess for sure. However, the inspiration, the guidance and so much more came from her mother, aunt, and abuela (grandmother.) Maya was raised by three naturally beautiful women who were strong and educated; all having master degrees…even abuelas mom, Nana, she was the first Puerto Rican female teacher. Can we say ‘Wow’, definitely picking up the sense that Maya had a very empowering environment in which she was brought up in. No wonder why, Maya says

“Education is key, awareness is key…be that vessel, spread the awareness.”

Actress Turned Activist #Antipollution

Actress & Activist Aria McKenna

Without having reached the edges of the earth, I think we can all pretty much agree that there’s alot of pollution going around. From sitting in traffic jams with the smell of car fumes intoxicating the air, to watching thousands of birds fall from the sky, to witnessing deceased whales floating up to shore, to people dying from simple bathroom mold – somethings gotta give! Noticing the signs, Actress Aria McKenna, decided to create a campaign on Indie Gogo that would fund her god-given, genius idea! Right now as we speak… or read (metaphorically so) McKenna is in Los Angeles, California, writing a script alongside her new partner Jeff Abugov (Producer of Two & A Half Men) for her web series entitled Revolution Earth which will indirectly teach audiences how to live in a cleaner & healthier environment, instead of waiting for the ‘powers that be’ such as governmental parties and programs to do the job that we as citizens can do ourselves.

A graduate from The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in L.A., Aria McKenna never dreamed that she would become so passionate about the study of ecology. However, it wasn’t long before she started noticing that where she once enjoyed a crystal clear sighting of the scenic mountain view, were now becoming blocked with thick smog from less than a mile away where she stood, thus, threatening her air quality as she began getting allergies more frequently.

ST. LUCIA’S MYSTERIOUS PEARL OF BEAUTY IS

CHOISELLE

Mysterious stories from how the witch doctor cured someone from repetitive voodoo nightmares, to how the modern day medicine man fell in love with an exotic island native, have spilled from people’s mouths throughout the ages about the Caribbean. But one thing that is refreshingly new, is the body skincare brand, CHOISELLE, created by – yes – another exotic island native named Nydia Norville, who created this line due to her earlier childhood years spent with her grandmother as she picked from the plants, trees and herbs growing around them.

BathBodyOil

It’s no secret that one of the best beauty remedies is to take a dip and swim inside of a tropical based ocean where the salt water detoxifies your skin in conjunction with the sun that recharges cell rejuvenation. But the truth of the matter is that most of us live in urban cities where we work hard, juggle full time careers, and are exposed to way too much pollution and toxic chemicals on a daily basis. In short, we have to invest in the maintenance of our beauty to keep ourselves looking healthy and radiant before our environment ages us quicker. Norville knows this all too well as she started her career as a print model before creating her luxurious skincare products. Below is a Q&A with the fabulous Beauty Expert, revealing why her products are a must-have for every woman’s regimen.

logo1) HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE BRAND NAME FOR YOUR SKINCARE LINE?

The inspiration behind my line came from my early childhood spent on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. I drew from my experience watching my grandmother and other women around me prepare medicinal and skincare remedies using ingredients from plants, trees and herbs growing around them. Choiselle (pronounced SHWA-ZELLE) is loosely named after the town in St. Lucia called Choiseul (pronounced SHOW-ZELLE). I changed the pronunciation and spelling just a bit. It was my way of paying tribute to the place that inspired me.

2) WHERE ARE THE INGREDIENTS INSPIRED OR DERIVED FROM?

I wanted to use ingredients from nature in their purest form as possible. I first started looking at ingredients native to the Caribbean and from there branched out into different regions. The initial inspiration comes from the Caribbean. We have mango butter and lemongrass. Citronella which is lemongrass’s “cousin” is what I remember seeing being used to make tea.  They smell very similar and even look almost the same. We also incorporated ingredients from other regions such as lavender from France and ylang ylang which is native to Southeast Asia.

choiselle-63) WHERE ARE YOUR PRODUCTS CURRENTLY BEING SOLD? HAVE YOU CROSS PROMOTED WITH OTHER COMPANIES?

Our products are currently being sold on our online store and we have selected products at Aetheria Relaxation Spa in New Canaan, CT.  We will be announcing very soon that our products will be available in the spa of a luxury hotel in the Caribbean but we can’t mention the name yet. Stay tuned.
